What's Your "December To Remember"?

""When the weather gets cold, our family loves to get together to play games. A few days before Christmas, we love to go driving around the area looking at the festive lights. On Christmas eve, we pop some popcorn and share in a family movie. That is fun for all of us despite our ages and we all look forward to the evening together." -Jean

Lexus To The Rescue!

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

HO HO…UH OH!  While surfing the internet awaiting their big night out, Santa’s reindeer discovered a last-minute travel deal to spend the holidays in Hawaii and immediately departed for the tropics. In a panic, Santa called Lexus for help.

“I know Lexus delivers the best customer experience in the industry, so I called to see if they could help me out,” said Santa. “I needed a self-propelled sleigh with every bell and whistle to complete my task of delivering toys to all the good boys and girls around the world.”

“When we got the call from Santa, we immediately sprang into action,” said Lexus General Manager Mark Templin. “We couldn’t bear the thought of leaving the big guy high and dry. Our elves and engineers are proud to introduce the ‘Lexus Flying Luxury Cruiser,’ or LFLC for short.”

The new Lexus Flying Luxury Cruiser features:

·         An advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive system with 800 reindeer-power which creates fewer emissions than even a single reindeer. It also features an EV mode to allow Santa to stealthily land on every rooftop

·         Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert to make Santa aware of any objects around him (like chimneys) to ensure safe maneuvering

·         Advanced Pre-Collision System to gauge if Santa is approaching an object too quickly in which case it will slow down and stop the Cruiser, helping prevent Grandma from getting run over

·         Lexus Navigation System with e-Destination so Santa can send all the addresses for the nice children to his Cruiser in advance.

·         Lexus Enform® with a Pandora® playlist that includes all Santa’s favorite tunes from “Grinch Live from Whoville,” “Frosty and the Snowmen” and the ever-popular band “Ebenezer and the Scrooges.”

·         A large, red LED and infrared light with stereo cameras for the front of his sleigh so he can see on a foggy night without Rudolph.

Of course, the LFLC comes with a lifetime warranty and Lexus’ 24-Hour Roof-side Assistance for Santa and Mrs. Claus’ peace of mind.

“I can’t thank Lexus enough for making sure all the girls and boys around the world have a great Christmas,” said Santa, with a twinkle in his eye. “You’ll go down in history.”

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: One indicator or blinker is flashing faster than the other

2

When you indicate one way and the blinker flashes quicker than when you indicate the other way, it means one of the bulbs has blown. An auto parts store will be able to tell you what sort of bulb you need to replace it with and your manual should show you how to get at the indicator bulbs - they're different on every car.

"We Would Not Hesitate To Recommend The Purchase Of A Lexus To Anyone"

Cars_com_logo_-_21
"The purchase of our first 2004 Lexus ES300 was due to the time Michelle, your financial manager at the time, spent with us. In the eight years of driving the 2004 back and forth to Arizona, the only repair required was a leak in the oil gasket. We are now the proud owners of a 2012 ES350 that is giving us the same performance. We feel your trained service department is to be complimented for there excellent work. We would not hesitate to recommend the purchase of a Lexus to anyone."

Monday Maintenance: The Test Drive

The test drive is one of the most important parts of buying a car. No matter what the car reviews say, if a vehicle doesn't fit you and your lifestyle, you're going to become dissatisfied with it long before that payment book is empty. The test drive is your opportunity to make your own personal assessment in a thorough, hands-on manner. If you're attentive to the details here, you can quickly tell whether or not you and the vehicle are meant for a long-term relationship.

The test drive is your opportunity to make your own personal assessment in a thorough, hands-on manner. When it comes to test driving a vehicle, the more time behind the wheel on various roads, the better. If you can arrange to rent a vehicle that's similar to the one you're considering, it could be worth the cost to be able to spend several days in it. Besides helping you become familiar with the vehicle, a rental car—without the new-car gloss—can also provide a reality check by showing you what yours might be like a year or more down the road. Most often, though, you'll have to make the most of the dealership test-drive. Here are some tips:

Test Drive Tips

  • Don't rush. Allow yourself the time to do it properly. A car's true personality (the side you won't find on paper) really only shows up while driving. Also, make sure you can concentrate on the vehicle. If you feel self-conscious or distracted by the salesperson, politely ask him or her if you can drive alone.
  • Take another person to the dealership. Your friend can give you a second opinion, take notes while you're driving, or run interference with the salesperson, if necessary.
  • Start with the basics. How easy is it to get in and out of the vehicle? Some taller vehicles require a high step-up, which can be awkward for shorter people.
  • Does the car fit you? Adjust the seat and steering wheel until you're comfortable. Seats vary quite a bit from one vehicle to the next. A seat that fits one person perfectly may be contoured wrong for someone else. Over the long run, if a seat isn't just right, it can become a real annoyance. Also, can you reach the pedals comfortably without being too close or too far from the steering wheel?
  • How's the safety factor? Does the seatbelt fit comfortably across your body, without the shoulder belt cutting into your neck or riding too low? Are the belts adjustable? Is the headrest adjustable? Are there rear headrests?
  • Are the controls conveniently located? With all the other distractions of driving, you don't need hard-to-operate controls. Are the dash switches easy to reach and the gauges easy to read? Are commonly used controls positioned high enough so that you don't have to divert your eyes too far from the road?
  • Are there places to stow things? Can you fit CDs or cassettes in the center console? Are the cupholders secure and adjustable enough to fit a variety of sizes? Does the rear seat fold down for carrying larger loads in the trunk? On a minivan or sport-utility, can you open and close the rear door or liftgate easily?
  • How well can you see in all directions? Are there blind spots that could pose vision problems? Can you see the front of the hood well enough to use it as a gauge when parking? Try pulling into one or more parking spaces to see how easy it is to park.
  • Feel free to choose your own driving route so that you can take the car on a variety of road surfaces, from a high-speed highway to a patched-up back road. Is the ride smooth and comfortable or rough and bouncy? If you typically drive on hills, try to include them, too. A car that feels fine on level ground can run out of steam on hills.
  • How's the driveability? Is the vehicle easy to steer in a crowded lot without being too vague on the highway? On the road, does the car feel responsive and controlled or sluggish and wallowy? Can you accelerate onto an interstate or freeway comfortably without holding up traffic?
  • If you can find an empty stretch of road where you'll be safe, try applying the brakes hard a couple of times. How's the feel of the pedal? Do the brakes respond adequately in proportion to the amount of pressure you apply to the pedal?
  • Listen as you drive. How quiet or noisy is the overall experience? Noise typically comes from the engine, wind, and the tires on the road. Also, listen for any squeaks or rattles. There shouldn't be any in a brand new car.
  • If you'll be test driving several cars, try to do them in the same day so that your impressions are fresh. When evaluating the differences between vehicles, there's nothing more informative than being able to drive them back to back.

10 Commonly Forgotten Vehicle Maintenance Tips

Vehicle maintenance is something that is often overlooked on most cars and trucks; most people will avoid maintenance and just drive em till they drop or the engine blows. There are a few particulars of maintenance that should never be over looked. This article will outline the most common things as far as maintenance that are a must to keeping your vehicle on the road.

Oil changes

As far as maintenance is concerned oil changes are a must and should be done regularly to keep your engine free of friction causing deposits. Actually changing your oil and not just adding oil is a must. If you are simply adding oil to your engine and not changing it with the filter you are doing your engine a major disservice. When just adding oil when it gets low you are creating silt deposits in the bottom of the pan that over time can cause oiling issues when the pick up tube screen gets clogged; this can lead to low oil pressure and poor oiling to the top end of the motor, ultimately it will cause engine failure. Another oil changing maintenance tip is to never change the type of oil you use; if you use cheap oil than continue to do so. Switching from cheap oil to a full synthetic can lead to gasket and oil sealing problems whereas the cheap oil leaves deposits behind that seal up these tiny crevices; full synthetic has many detergents that will clean these deposits away and cause oil leaks.

Transmission service

The number one cause of automatic transmission failure is the lack of changing the transmission fluid and internal filter at the correct intervals; for automatic transmission maintenance one should always refer to the owner's manual for the correct intervals. If you are a do-it-yourself kind of person automatic transmission service is a breeze. Simply drop the pan, remove the old filter and gasket and replace the transmission fluid (with the vehicle specific fluid, failure to do so can lead to automatic transmission failure).

Manual transmissions and rear ends

These two parts of a vehicle are often overlooked, especially the rear end. You should change these fluids at the regular maintenance intervals to ensure that they last a really long time. Over time low fluid levels can cause a lot of heat and friction that can cause expansion and contraction of the transmission and rear end metal geometry which can cause leaks. So, keeping fresh fluid in there and keeping them full is a must have for manual transmission and rear end maintenance.

Fuel filter

A clogged fuel filter is a sure fire way to fry a fuel pump or starve and engine from fuel and make it run lean. Fuel filter maintenance is very often over looked, failure to change the fuel filter can be very costly if you don't do it at the correct service intervals.

Spark plugs

Spark plugs are a very important part of engine maintenance; if they are not replaced at the recommended times they can create havoc on your engines ignition system. Worn out spark plugs can cause coil pack failure as well as engine misfire problems. An added benefit of changing your spark plugs is that they will provide you with the best fuel economy, making a complete burn of the air fuel mixture. Always use vehicle recommended spark plugs for ignition system maintenance; some cheaper spark plugs will just not work worth a darn and you may end up having to change them frequently.

Timing belt

This may be the most costly part of maintenance, but it is key from preventing your engine from having catastrophic engine damage. You should always change your timing belt as the vehicle manufacturer has scheduled it. Failure to do this maintenance can result in bent valves and damaged piston; essentially complete engine damage.

Balancing and rotating tires

You paid a lot of money for your tires so this type of maintenance is just a cheap portion of service to ensure your investment. The driving wheels on a vehicle will always wear out tires from the ones that simply roll, so rotating your tires and getting them balanced every six months or so is a good way to keep your tires in tip top shape, this will also eliminated annoying shakes in your steering wheel. In addition to this maintenance an alignment is also key, without a proper vehicle alignment after hitting a curb or a big pothole you may very well have changed your vehicles suspension geometry, this will lead to uneven wear on the inside or outside of your tires; so be warned.

Coolant

Coolant is the heart and soul of your engine maintenance program; if you begin to get low on coolant it can cause serious engine damage such as blow head gaskets and leave you stranded, you should check your coolant levels every two to three weeks and have the system flushed once a year. Also adding too much water into the system is a bad idea especially if you live in a climate that has freezing winters. You don't want your engines coolant to freeze and expand which can possible crack the block or make water seals leak.

Battery

Your battery is very important to the maintenance of your vehicles electrical system. A bad or undercharged battery (or jumping off the car too often) can cause damage to the alternator from overworking it and to the starter. Both of which can be costly to repair.

Serpentine belt

This piece of maintenance is fairly inexpensive to replace and can generate quite an annoying sound. Other than that you can be really up the creak if it breaks, because it operates your water pump and sometimes your power steering, alternator, and air conditioning. If your belt breaks either your engine is going to overheat or you will drain your battery; failure to do this maintenance will always leave you stranded.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Keeping Up Appearances

What's the simplest thing people can do to help maintain their car's value over time? Richard Griot of car care and tool supplier Griot's Garage says, "Keep all of your vehicle's surfaces — the glass, trim, paint and wheels — clean." And we agree.

Your car has many enemies — some visible, some not. Emissions from industrial plants are released into the environment, where they are transformed into nitric or sulfuric acid. When deposited onto your car, in either a wet or a dry state, these contaminants can eat paint and, in extreme cases, metal. When ignored, acid from dead bugs, bird droppings, tree sap and even fallen leaves can do the same. Even something as benign as dust can cause tiny scratches in your car's finish, which can make the vehicle look dull and lifeless.

And the longer offensive contaminants are left on your vehicle, the greater the extent of the damage they can cause to both the car and its perceived value.

So what, you say? A few war wounds are endearing, right? Wrong!

Perception Versus Reality
The reality is that people often value material items based on the way they look. According to the folks at Kelley Blue Book, aesthetics is one of the top considerations when a person buys a car. And since more people are testing the used-car market these days, it is important to keep your car looking its best so it's worth more when you are ready to sell it. A vehicle that has a pitted or stained finish or splotches of rust is a turnoff, and thus is worth less than a car that looks pristine, regardless of how you maintained the vehicle mechanically — sad, but true.

If you currently don't clean your car regularly (at least twice a month), it's not too late to change your ways. Of course, the quickest and easiest way to a sparkling clean car inside and out is to take your four-wheeled friend to a detail shop for the royal treatment. At $75 to $300 or more per visit, using a professional detailer twice a month can get rather pricey. Luckily, there are plenty of do-it-yourself products on the market that you can use to clean your car at home, saving time and money.

To help, we've compiled some advice from car-care professionals on how to properly clean and care for your automobile. Follow these guidelines and your ride will look like you have a detailer on weekly retainer.

ON THE OUTSIDE
Before breaking out the sponges and getting down to business, you'll want to park the vehicle in a shaded spot, preferably in a gravel area where the water can seep, rather than on asphalt that can cause rapid runoff. Direct sunlight can cause some surfaces to dry faster than you may want them to, leaving residue and, thus, unwanted streaks on the finish.

The Basic Wash
Now you're ready to get busy. You'll need a steady supply of water (make sure your hose has a trigger-type nozzle, to conserve water), a soft and dirt-free cloth (or a wash mitt, terry cloth towel or soft-bristle brush) and — last but not least — a proper car-wash soap.

Don't make the mistake of using dishwashing soap or a household cleaner on your car; they contain harsh detergents that can strip wax and damage paint. As Craig Burnett, chemist for Mothers Polishes-Waxes-Cleaners, puts it: "Car-wash products are designed to remove automotive dirt from cars, not grime from clothes or grease from dishes. Don't confuse your kitchen with your garage."

Also, most car-care experts recommend starting at the top of the vehicle and working your way down, focusing on one section at a time. "The bottom of your car, particularly behind the wheel wells, traditionally has heavier accumulations of dirt particles," explains Mike Pennington, director of training for Meguiar's, a leading producer of car-care products. "Washing from the top down minimizes the risk of contaminants in the water or getting caught in the wash mitt or brush, thus minimizing the chances of creating scratches or swirls in the paint as you rub the car clean."

Here's the best game plan:
1. First rinse the entire car with water to remove loose dirt.
2. Wash and rinse the vehicle one section at a time, working from top to bottom, to prevent a section from drying too quickly and leaving deposits or residue.
3. Don't scrub aggressively. Instead, rub the car's surface gently to loosen dirt. Aggressive rubbing can grind dirt right into the finish, leaving scratches and swirls.
4. Rinse the wash mitt or sponge often to prevent accumulated dirt from scratching the paint.
5. After the final rinse, wipe the excess water from the vehicle's surface to prevent water spotting. A soft terry cloth towel or a high-quality chamois are recommended. Keep the towel or chamois clean to help prevent scratching, and wipe the vehicle lightly to soak up water without abrading the vehicle's finish.

Note: If you live in a climate where sand or salt is used on the road surface, be sure to rinse inside the wheel wells, paying special attention to the lower part of the fender, where salt and sand may have accumulated. We recommend using a high-pressure hose for this task.

Wheels and Tires
One of the most dramatic ways to improve the appearance of your vehicle is to keep its tires and wheels (or rims) clean. Address the wheels first.

Have you ever noticed that the front wheels of many cars appear dirtier than the back wheels? This is caused by the accumulation of brake dust shed by disc brakes, which are on the front wheels of virtually all cars these days. A number of car-care products on the market do a good job of removing it. You simply spray the cleaner on and rinse after 30 to 60 seconds.

Be careful, however, to use the right kind of cleaner for your type of wheels. If you don't, the results could be devastating. For instance, a spray-on product designed for premium alloys will begin to strip off a typical wheel's protective varnish if left on too long. It can also damage plastic wheel covers. So read the directions and warnings carefully before you apply any wheel cleaner.

After the rims are spick-and-span, focus your attention on the tires. Many tire dressings simply spray on and require no wiping. They are formulated to produce a clean, slightly glossy look.

Wax On, Wax Off
At least 97 percent of today's vehicles come from the factory with some type of clear-coat finish that contains stabilizers, ultraviolet light blockers and UV light absorbers that help keep a vehicle's paint looking new longer. While they do provide great protection, clear-coats are not a panacea.

"Clear-coats can give drivers a false sense of security by appearing to protect the underlying base coat," says Matthew Broderick, group vice president of marketing at Turtle Wax Inc. "They are fragile and susceptible to scratches, abrasions and swirls that make the paint look dull."

Waxing your vehicle will help remove paint oxidation and surface dirt, while adding another layer of protection against grease and grime. Wax will also improve or remove minor damage such as surface scratches or light contaminants and will provide a high-luster finish.

Most automakers recommend that you wax your vehicle twice a year to protect its clear-coat from damage and maintain the car's color and shine. However, some auto-care suppliers recommend monthly waxing. "Ideally, a vehicle should be waxed three to four times per year," Pennington says, to maximize the protection provided by the wax. "A good strategy is to start right before the winter and get into a three-month cycle."

When waxing your ride:
1. Wash and dry the vehicle before applying any product.
2. The paint surface should be cool and not in direct sunlight. The outside temperature should be above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and humidity should be low.
3. Apply the wax in small sections with either a foam pad or small terry cloth towel using overlapping strokes or circular motions.
4. Wait for a section to dry to a haze before wiping the wax off with a terry cloth towel or cloth diaper. Wipe in both directions, turning the towels often. And remember to shake them out often to remove accumulated wax that might scratch the finish.
5. When completely finished, wipe the entire vehicle again, paying particular attention to the edges of trim pieces, doorjambs and moldings where excess wax may have accumulated.

For additional shine between wax jobs, several manufacturers offer spray-and-wipe products to quickly enhance a vehicle's shine.

ON THE INSIDE
Now that you have finished the exterior, it's time to tackle your car's interior.

First, thoroughly vacuum all carpets and upholstery to remove loose, dry dirt. Don't forget to vacuum under the seats.

Specialists recommend using lint-free towels and clean water to clean the dash area and seats. Cotton swabs are helpful for getting dust out of tight spots, and a clean, stiff-bristled brush is indispensable for removing caked-on dirt and grime in carpets and floor mats.

As far as solvents are concerned, Pennington suggests you always use a product that is designed for the surface you want to clean, whether it is leather, vinyl, plastic, wood, simulated wood or upholstery. Each product is specifically formulated for a particular surface and will not work effectively on other surfaces. In fact, the wrong cleaner may even do damage.

Even with right cleaner, don't use too much of it. "The biggest problem with interior cleaning is that many people overuse the cleaning products or saturate the carpet when they shampoo," Pennington says. Also never use a product that leaves a shiny, slick finish on the dashboard or steering wheel. A shiny dash reflects light, which can be a major safety hazard while driving. Same goes for a slippery steering wheel.

Interior

1. Remove dirt and dust using a vacuum cleaner. Wipe dirty surfaces with a

soft cloth damp with warm water.

2.When cleaning carpet and cloth interior, remove dirt and dust using a

vacuum cleaner. Apply a foaming-type carpet cleaner with sponge or

brush, allowing cleaner to work for a few minutes to loosen dirt.

Continue by rubbing carpet and cloth interior in a circular motion.

Wipe off excess with a clean cloth. If any dirt remains, repeat process.

Best results are obtained by keeping carpet and cloth interior as dry

as possible.

3.When cleaning leather, remove dirt and dust using a vacuum cleaner.

Using a small amount of neutral wool detergent mixed in water, apply to

leather using a sponge, rubbing in a circular motion. Wipe off excess

detergent and let leather dry in an open air location.

Exterior

1.Working from top to bottom, apply lots of low pressure water to vehicle

body, wheel wells and underside of the vehicle to remove any dirt or

dust. Wash the vehicle body using a soft sponge or soft cotton cloth with

mild car wash soap. Rinse off with water.

2.Wax vehicle paint if water does not bead on a clean vehicle surface.

Using a soft cotton cloth, apply car wax when the vehicle body is cool.

Wheels

1.Wait for hot wheels to cool before getting wheels wet.

2. Using a soft sponge or soft cotton cloth, apply same mild car wash soap

as used for the paint. Quickly rinse off soap with water. Using a soft

cotton cloth, apply car wax as used for the paint.

Lexus of Maplewood is proud to recognize Georgein our October Employee Spotlight.

George has worked at Lexus of Maplewood for 3 ½ years but has over 30 years in the automotive industry. He worked at a number of different dealerships throughout his Sales career and to name a few; he started at Viking Chevrolet, spent 20 years at Win Stephens Buick | Jeep and 7 years at Borton Volvo. When he was hired at Lexus of Maplewood, George was continuing his career in Sales, but after a short amount of time, he was hired as a Finance Manager in the Financial Services Department. As a Finance Manager, George really enjoys working with the customers. His part of the vehicle buying process is very rewarding because the customers are always excited about completing the final paperwork so they can drive away in their new Lexus. Lexus of Maplewood understands that buying a new vehicle is a big life event. George is fantastic at treating every customer special so they have a very positive experience.

Outside of work George spends time with his wife Jan, his daughter Elizabeth and his 8 year old grandson Lucas. George and Jan are Twins fans and recently took a road trip to Vegas and San Diego. When they drove to San Diego they were able to see the Twins play the Padres. Though the trip home was a 39 hour drive, George and Jan really enjoy taking road trips and will continue to plan future trips around Twins games. Right now, most of their road trips are to Annedale where they have a cabin and his family spends time taking in the Minnesota four seasons by snowmobiling, boating, hiking and fishing.

George also has spent a lot of time on the road, not driving, but running or roller blading. He has completed 5 marathons and 2 roller blade marathons. The marathons were in Chicago, Minneapolis, and Duluth. George actually roller bladed in the Metrodome for one of the roller blade marathons he completed. Getting ready for a marathon is a lot of work but he might have one or two more marathons in his future.

Thank you George for all your hard work and dedication to Lexus of Maplewood.

The hospitality at this dealership makes purchasing a car a pleasant experience - no pressure, only trying to please the customer. I would always recommend Lexus of Maplewood to anyone and have sent several coworkers to this dealership and they have said the same."

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: How Lexus Preemptively Keeps You Safe

Years ago, whenever I went on long fishing trips with my friend Chris, we had a rule for the drive home—nobody gets to sleep. At the end of a long day, we wanted all eyes scanning the road for hazards. Sure enough, one day I spotted a big deer springing onto the highway, and my warning cry gave Chris, at the wheel, the extra split second he needed to avoid it.

Close call.

The Advanced Pre-Collision System (APCS) with Collision Avoidance Assist[1], available with the new 2013 LS, is kind of like having an alert buddy with you—except of course, this buddy is equipped with super-sophisticated things like millimeter radar and near-infrared rays.

In short, it’s one of the most advanced automotive safety systems available.

We’ve talked about Lexus Pre-Collision and Advanced Pre-Collision systems before, available in the previous generation LS and other models. But this latest Advanced Pre-Collision System with Collision Avoidance Assist is designed to do some cool new stuff.

But before we get into that, here’s a quick APCS primer.

SCANS AND PREPARES

In a nutshell, when activated, APCS constantly scans for hazards ahead while the vehicle is in motion. It does this using milliwave radar, which is emitted from behind the Lexus badge, plus a stereo camera that’s integrated into the rear-view mirror.

The system scans beyond the range of the low-beam headlights, meaning the APCS-equipped Lexus models have the potential to recognize a hazard at night before a fully alert driver can see it.

And while APCS is scanning the road ahead, another system, the optional Driver Attention Monitor, is monitoring the direction the driver is facing to confirm that you’re facing forward. (New to the 2013 LS, the Driver Attention Monitor also monitors your eyelids.)

In the event of a hazard in your path, a whole lot of different things happen very fast. Right away, the APCS computer calculates the LS’s speed and closing ratio. Meanwhile, the Driver Attention Monitor is calculating the driver’s status: Are your eyes fully open? Have you turned to face your buddy to reemphasize the size of that huge rainbow trout you caught earlier?

In both situations, the system will flash a warning light and sound an alarm; if that doesn't get your attention, the Collision Avoidance System is designed to actually apply the brakes.

STOPS THE CAR (FROM SPEEDS OF UP TO 23 MPH)

The purpose of applying the brakes is two-fold: to get the driver’s attention so that further evasive action can hopefully be taken, and also to help mitigate the effects of a potential collision. As part of its capabilities, this newly available APCS feature is designed to bring the 2013 LS to a complete stop at speeds below 24 miles per hour.

Another enhancement for the 2013 LS is that the system not only recognizes other vehicles but pedestrians as well, thanks to two stereo cameras facing outward. It’s also noteworthy that the system works day or night—many similar systems in non-Lexus vehicles are designed only for daytime operation.

UNAVOIDABLE COLLISIONS

So about those worst-case scenarios, where the vehicle is really, really coming up on something, and a collision is unavoidable?

Here, the passive safety features of the Advanced Pre-Collision System come into play. To help give the driver an added advantage, APCS pressurizes the Brake Assist, so that once the driver applies the brake, it will deliver extra braking power.

Also, to help protect the driver and front passenger, when APCS detects that an unavoidable frontal collision is imminent, it retracts the front seatbelts. On vehicles equipped with Adaptive Variable Suspension or Air Suspension, it also stiffens the front suspension to help prevent a nose dive from sudden braking, which in turn helps the driver keep control.

Lexus Infotainment Center to Get Upgrade Next Year?

Capture
Senior brand manager for Lexus Europe, Leonardo Carluccio, has shared details with AutomotiveIT about the future of infotainment in Lexus vehicles:

Carluccio said Lexus will start offering upgraded infotainment in Europe in June, 2013. The system, which will rely on smartphones that connect through the Mirrorlink standard, will feature a bigger screen, improved connectivity and various connected services, including Google searching and various other Apps.

All Lexus models will have monitors that are at least 7 inches in diameter, Carluccio said.

A major upgrade will come in 2015, when new Lexus models will feature a totally new infotainment system with a range of new connected features and improved flexibility to add various features if and when desired.

While this new system may apply to European vehicles only, it’s more likely to be offered worldwide — Mirrorlink is a new global standard that creates a deep integration between smartphones and the in-car system.

Here’s a quick video demonstration:

There is one major drawback to the Mirrorlink standard — at this time, it does not work with the Apple iPhone. However, Apple has announced a new automotive iPhone initiative, and Toyota/Lexus was named as one of the nine initial automakers to have access to the technology (the Mercedes A-Class is the first known vehicle to implement the new system).

While there’s more questions than answers at this point, the June 2013 introduction suggests this upgraded infotainment system may debut with the next-generation IS — meaning we could see more about this new technology as early as the Detroit autoshow in January.

Vehicle System/Component Service Notes

Automatic Transmission Fluid
Check fluid level with engine running and
transmission in park. If low, add the type
of automatic transmission fluid specified
in the owner's manual and/or on dipstick.
For maximum performance, change every
two years or 24,000 miles, or as directed
in owner's manual.

Battery and Cables
Battery should be securely mounted.
Battery connection should be clean, tight
and corrosion free. If the battery is three
years old or more, it should be tested and
replaced if necessary.

Belts
Check V-belts and serpentine belts for
looseness and condition. Replace when
cracked, frayed, glazed or showing signs
of excessive wear. Replace timing belt per
interval specified in owner's manual.
Typically this is 60,000 to 90,000 miles.
Not replacing the belt as required could
cause a breakdown or serious engine
damage.

Brakes
Check the entire brake system every year,
including brake linings, rotors and drums.

Cabin Air Filter
Replace annually, or more often in areas
with heavy airborne contaminants or
whenever heating or cooling efficiency is
reduced.

Chassis Lubrication
Many newer cars are lubed-for-life; some
still require this service. Check owner's
manual. Replacement steering and
suspension components may require
periodic lubrication.

Check Engine Light On
If light comes on while driving or remains
on, your vehicle may have an emissions or
sensor problem and should be analyzed. If
light flashes, the condition is more severe
and must be checked immediately to
prevent catalytic converter damage.

Cleaning & Polishing
To prevent stripping the vehicle's wax
finish, use only automotive car wash
products, not dishwashing liquids. Polish

at least twice a year to maintain and protect the finish.

Coolant (Antifreeze)
Check level at reservoir. Never open a hot
radiator cap. If low, add 50/50 mix of
approved antifreeze and distilled water.
Change coolant annually on most vehicles.

Engine Air Filter
Inspect filter at each oil change. Replace
annually or when leaking, torn, water or
oil soaked, dirty or showing other signs of
wear.

Engine Oil and Filter
Check level with engine off at every fill
up. For maximum engine life, change oil
and filter every three months or 3,000
miles or as directed in your owner's
manual. Use specified oil grade and weight.

Exhaust
Inspect for leaks, damage and broken
supports or hangers if there is an unusual
noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous
and must be corrected without delay.

Fuel Filter
Inspect filter at each oil change. Replace
if restricted or water contaminated or
once a year on cars with carburetors. On
cars with fuel injection, replace filter
every two years or 24,000 miles.

Hoses
Inspect hoses at each oil change and
replace when leaking, brittle, cracked,
rusted, swollen or restricted.

Lights
Replace bulb immediately if light is out.
Check fuses first.

Oxygen Sensor
Replace at interval as recommended in
owner's manual or when other conditions
dictate, such as failing an emissions test.
Some cars have an oxygen sensor
replacement light that appears when
oxygen sensor replacement is needed.
1996 and newer cars have more than
one oxygen sensor.

Power Steering Fluid
Check the fluid with the car warmed up.
Add correct type of fluid if low. If
frequent topping off is required, inspect
for leaks and replace if contaminated.

Spark Plugs
Typical replacement intervals range
between 30,000 and 100,000 miles,
depending on the vehicle and type of
spark plug. Always consult your owner's
manual for your specific vehicle.

Steering and Suspension
Inspect system annually, including shock
absorbers, struts and chassis parts, such
as ball joints, tie rod ends and other
related components. Replace if leaks,
damage and loose mounting hardware
are found. Symptoms of worn suspension
include uneven tire wear and excessive
bouncing after bumps.

Tire Inflation and Condition
Check the pressure of all tires, including
the spare, at every oil change. Check the
tread for uneven or irregular wear and
cuts or bruises along the sidewalls.
Inflate tires and maintain at
recommended pressure. Replace tires if
worn or damaged.

Windshield Washer Fluid
Check fluid level monthly. Some vehicles
have two reservoirs. Do not use water.
Use washer fluid only.

Wiper Blades
Replace every six months or when
cracked, cut, torn, streaking or
chattering.

Employee Spotlight - Greg Carlini

644404_10151057980832794_182076892_n
This month, the Lexus of Maplewood Pre-Owned Department is proud to highlight Greg Carlini. Greg Carlini has been with Lexus of Maplewood for 7 years and will be celebrating his anniversary here this Novem
ber. He started out in the Pre-Owned Department and has been very successful as a Sales Associate.

One of the reason’s Greg has so much success with our customers is his positive attitude. He comes to Lexus of Maplewood every day ready to help our customers and gives every person the best customer service he can provide. I asked Greg what his favorite part about his job is and he commented, “I really love meeting and getting to know people from all walks of life. And of course I love selling! Lexus of Maplewood is a fantastic place to work because of the supportive culture. I am really honored to have the opportunity to be a Sales Associate at Lexus of Maplewood.”

When Greg started at the dealership he had 10 years of experience in Sales, but before his dealership career there was his career in television. Greg followed in his father’s footsteps as director of TV shows and producingTV commercials for a local NBC station in Nebraska. His father, Ulysses Carlini, is a pioneer in TV and was inducted into the Nebraska Broadcasters Association’s Hall of Fame in 2005. Greg’s dad is recognized for helping TV become a respected and trusted source of entertainment for more than 50 years. As former KNOP-TV operations manager, Greg enjoyed producing, directing and creating award-winning TV shows and commercials while in Nebraska.

Greg met his wife, Jodi, an anchor/reporter at the TV station and now they have been married for 29 years. Greg and Jodi moved to the Twin Cities when Jodi took a position with KSTP-TV where she worked for 10 years before taking the senior public relations and video producer position with HealthEast Care System, where she also hosts and produces the Emmy-award winning TV show, “Inside Health Care.”

Greg enjoys spending his time outside of work with his family. His son Joe is following in his own father’s footsteps by producing, but Film vs.Television. Joe is recognized as an up and coming, award-winning filmmaker, who recently held his first film premiere, a documentary called “Second Chance U” at the St. Anthony Main Theatre to a packed house. Joe is currently producing and directing his first full-length movie, “My Senior Year,” which he also wrote.

Greg’s daughter Christina, a Chicago resident, is in marketing for the Chicago Cubs and a former Twin Cities model. The family recently celebrated her wedding day at the Varsity Theatre in DinkeyTown.

All the employees in the Pre-Owned Department enjoy working with Greg and we look forward to many more exciting years of vehicle sales ahead.

More Details on the Lexus LF-CC Coupe Concept

Capture
Motor Trend had an opportunity to talk with the Lexus Design group manager Takeshi Tanabe about the new LF-CC concept that debuted yesterday, and it’s definitely worth reading — here a couple quotes:

Unlike other Lexus hybrids, the body design doesn’t aim to make explicit the hybrid powertrain or fuel-economy potential. “We used to show the cars were hybrid, but now this is more emotional and sporty,” says Lexus Design group manager Takeshi Tanabe. The long nose will also house gasoline engines, which at present consist of a version of the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four (IS 250), 3.5-liter V-6 (IS 350), and the 5.0-liter V-8 in the IS F in the U.S. This would be the first IS hybrid.

Tanabe explains, “In the past, Lexus was about reliability, quality, comfort, and silence. We still have that, but we are adding emotion through the design to attract younger buyers. From now, from the new GS and this CC Concept, we’re adding excitement.”

“Maybe some will like this car; maybe some won’t,” says Tanabe. “I don’t want to say we’ll offend people who don’t like it, but I do want to be distinctive.”

We are completely satisfied with the process and the product, which is why we returned to Lexus of Maplewood. This is truly a fine vehicle and I enjoy the service/maintenance experience."

"Matt is very professional and takes the time to make sure that I am satisfied with everything."

"I had my best experience with Lexus when I was lucky to have Greg as my saleman. He helped me find the car that I have been looking for, he called me whenever a car came in that I might be interested in. I think that is over the normal saleman. I would tell my friends and family who to contact who would help the best. I really appreciate all the help I received from Greg. Thanks Again!!"

- Linda

"I recently purchased my first (used) Lexus at this dealership. I was absolutely amazed by the professionalism, support, and follow up of everyone I worked with. My sales person was Jeremy who took the time to answer all my questions and ensure the entire car buying process was quick and easy. He completely accomodated my rather hectic schedule and made sure I understood and was comfortable with all of the car's features (he even scheduled time on an alternate day so that the delivery coordinator could go over things with me when it best fit my schedule). I could not have been more impressed with this dealership!"

"In one word lovely sums up my experience at Maplewood Lexus. The staff was warm and engaging without an ounce of urgency or push. Jeremy first spent time with me looking at new lease options even though he was in used sales. Eventually I found a used vehicle online and when I contacted him about seeing it he came into work early to assist me. I was long over due for a nice ride and it was truly a happy occasion for me made even more special by the staff who assisted me."

"I found Maplewood Lexus to be an excellent dealership. The staff was helpful without being pushy."

More great words from happy patrons!

Cars_com_logo_-_21
"Matt provided us with very professional, knowledgeable, and friendly sales and service regarding the purchase of our RX 350. We brought our previous Lexus in for service and ended up purchasing the RX350 from Matt. Matt impresses us with his recognition of us as his customers, including our names and where we are from. We have recommended him to our friends because of his honesty, genuineness, and knowledge of Lexus products."

"I recently purchased a pre-owned vehicle at Lexus of Maplewood and Dan not only earned my business but my loyalty. Thank you again for your efforts!"

"Our overall experience with the salesperson and dealer was very positive. The process was very stress free. The salesperson was so accommodating. He answered every question and following up on our many requests."

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Tailgating

Img_17092012_141142
It's nearly Fall, and odds are most of us are participating in, watching, or cheering on some kind of sports team. And for many fans, a game is not a game unless a tailgate precedes it. Taking it one step further... If you've got a 4WD Pick up Truck or SUV, chances are your vehicle serves as home base for your friends and family at the tailgate party!

Here are the best tips from professional tailgaters on how to throw the perfect tailgate party yourself, as well as tips to help you become the ultimate tailgater:

Make a Tailgating Checklist

To ensure nothing gets left at home, make a list of things you need to take to the tailgate party. Be sure to put your game tickets on the list too!

Have a Tailgating Theme

Think up a creative theme for your tailgate. If it's Thanksgiving, bring a turkey. If it's Christmas, bring a tree. Or, base your theme and decorations on the opponent. For example, you might have Cajun food against the Saints, Philly cheese steaks against the Eagles, or fish against the Dolphins.

Dress for the Occasion

Dress appropriately for several hours outdoors -- and be prepared for drastic temperature changes. And don't forget to wear comfortable shoes.

Show Some Tailgating Team Spirit

Show your team spirit... Wear team colors. Tailgaters are usually the biggest and best fans! After all, to become the ultimate tailgater, you'll want to stir up some tailgater's envy!

Timing is Everything

Get there early. You'll want to arrive 3-4 hours before game time to beat the crowd and claim your turf. And, plan to stay late so as to not miss a moment of the post-game enthusiasm.

Location, Location, Location

Set up your tailgate party near a grassy area, or bring a roll of Astroturf to set up at the end of the row -- for a more comfortable atmosphere with lots of room to socialize. Parking at the end of a row can also give you more partying space.

Tailgating in Parking Lots

Serious tailgaters choose a parking lot that has a view of the stadium if on-site parking is not available. Since the stadium is your Mecca, you need to be able to see it so you can bow to it occasionally.

Mark Your Spot At The Tailgating Party

A flag or team pennant on a tall pole helps people locate the party and makes a statement of team spirit.

Seating Arrangements

Don't worry about bringing chairs for everyone. Those who want to sit will bring their own chairs.

Generating Power

Serious tailgaters bring a small generator for powering a TV, stereo system or electric space heater during cold weather games.

Timing the Eats

Make sure your food is ready 1 to 2 hours before game time, so you have enough time to eat, clean up and find your seat in the stadium.

Put out the Fire

If you're using a charcoal grill, bring along extra water to douse the embers and a plastic garbage bag to put the cold coals in.

Be Smokey's Best Friend

Make sure that you have some way of extinguishing and throwing away your hot coals. Whatever you do, dispose of firewood or charcoal briquettes properly. Some stadiums have a designated place for hot ashes, but do not dump them in the grass or in trash bins.

Garbage In, Garbage Out

Bring your own lawn-size trash bags, because there never seem to be enough garbage receptacles on hand.
